The rules, in short.
5v5 soccer has no official rules: neither IFAB nor FIFA writes any. Each venue or league sets its own; here’s what’s common.
- 5
Five against five
Four outfield players and a goalkeeper per team, often on a field enclosed by nets.
- 1 h
How long
For pickup games, you book a one-hour slot and the clock doesn’t stop. You play one block or two halves.
- Net
Ball in the net
A ball that hits the net is out of play, and play often restarts from the goalkeeper.
- Before
What you agree on first
With friends, you agree before kickoff: tackles, balls over head height, next goal wins.
- Draw
A tie
In tournament pools, draws are often allowed; in the knockout rounds, it goes to penalties.
Or without leaving the field.
One press per goal, on your watch or the three buttons on your earbuds: ⏮ for pink, ⏭ for yellow. ⏯ starts or stops the clock; two quick presses undo the last goal.
The questions people ask.
Are there official rules for 5v5 soccer?
No. Neither IFAB nor FIFA publishes any, apart from futsal, which has its own Laws. Each venue or league writes its rules.
How do you get better at 5v5 soccer?
Start by agreeing on the basics: how long, tackles, and what happens when the ball hits the net. The rest gets played out on the field.
How long is a 5v5 soccer game?
Whatever the venue or the team decides: often a one-hour slot. Matchito offers two 25-minute halves, on a running clock.
Is 5v5 soccer the same as futsal?
No. Futsal is also played five a side, but it has its own Laws written by FIFA: stopped clock, accumulated fouls, time-outs. 5v5 soccer has no official rules.
Are there sin bins or penalties in 5v5 soccer?
It depends on the venue. Some rules keep the area for the goalkeeper only, add a temporary sending-off, or give a penalty after several fouls. None of this is a general rule: read the venue’s rules before you play.
