The rules, in short.

What the WPBSA rules say, and nothing more.

The frame, in one press.

One press per frame won, on your watch or the three buttons on your earbuds: ⏮ for pink, ⏭ for yellow. ⏯ undoes the last frame.

The questions people ask.

How much are the balls worth in snooker?

A red is 1 point. Yellow 2, green 3, brown 4, blue 5, pink 6 and black 7.

What is the highest score in snooker?

147 in one break, with no foul by the opponent: all 15 reds each taken with the black, then the six colors. It’s a calculation; the rules don’t spell it out.

How do you win at snooker?

The frame goes to the player with the most points when the table is clear, or to the one whose opponent concedes it. The match goes to whoever wins the set number of frames.

What happens after a foul?

The opponent gets 4 to 7 points, depending on the ball on. They can also ask you to play again.

What is a free ball?

After a foul, if you’re left snookered, you can nominate another ball as the ball on. That’s called a free ball.

Do the colours go back on the table?

Yes, while reds remain: a potted colour is put back on its spot before the next shot. Once the reds are gone, the colours potted in order stay off.

What is a “miss”?

You must do your best to hit the ball on. If the referee judges you didn’t, they call “foul and a miss”: your opponent takes the points and can have you play again with the balls put back. If the ball on was in full view and you fail three times in a row, the frame goes to your opponent, after a warning. No miss is called if a player needed penalty points and the miss wasn’t intentional.
