The rules, in short.

What the World Squash Federation’s rules say, and nothing more.

Or leave your phone in your bag.

One press per rally won, on your watch or the three buttons on your earbuds: ⏮ for pink, ⏭ for yellow. ⏯ undoes the last point. The serve follows the winner.

The questions people ask.

How many points do you need to win a game of squash?

Eleven. At 10 all, you need a two-point lead, with no cap.

Whoever wins the spin of the racket. After that, the winner of the rally always serves.

How do you serve in squash?

One foot inside the service box, not touching its lines. The ball goes straight to the front wall, between the service line and the out line, then lands in the opposite back quarter without touching a line.

World Squash, Rules of Singles Squash 2025, version 1.2.2, Rule 5.7
Do you get a second serve?

No. A missed serve is a fault, and the receiver wins the rally.

World Squash, Rules of Singles Squash 2025, version 1.2.2, Rule 5.8
What’s the difference between a let and a stroke?

A let replays the rally. A stroke gives the point to the player who was obstructed, for example when the opponent didn’t make every effort to avoid it.

How is the score called?

The server’s score first, preceded by “hand out” when the server changes. The Marker calls “game ball” when a player needs one point to win the game, “match ball” to win the match, and at 10-all, that a player must win by 2 points.
